10 Foods for Preventing Breast Cancer

1. Mushrooms

A study published in Nutrition and Cancer in 2010 stated, the habit of eating higher fungi associated with a lower risk of breast cancer among pre-menopausal women. Cremini, oyster and shiitake mushrooms, contain antioxidants such as L-ergothioneine, which may provide protection against cancer.

2. Broccoli sprouts

Broccoli sprouts has a high content of sulforaphane which is a form of antioxidant. Scientists from the University of Michigan found that these compounds can target and destroy tumor cells.

3. Pomegranate

A crunchy pomegranate seed from the fruit (also called arils) contains a compound called asamellagic - a powerful antioxidant that can inhibit an enzyme that plays a role in the development of breast cancer, according to scientists from the U.S. from the City of Hope Beckman Research Institute.

4. Lentils

Choline, an essential nutrient that is abundant in eggs, can reduce the risk of women suffering from breast cancer as big as 24 percent, according to a U.S. study involving more than 3,000 respondents. This important nutrient found in egg yolks. U.S. Institute of Medicine recommends women have to meet about 425 milligrams of choline per day. Some other sources of choline include fish, poultry, beef, broccoli and wheat.

9. Salmon

Salmon is one of the few foods that contain vitamin D in significant amounts. Researchers at Toronto Mount Sinai Hospital, said that increasing vitamin D from sunlight is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer by 24 percent.

Vitamin D can prevent cells becoming cancerous. Consumption of fresh or canned salmon which is rich in docosahexaenoic acid content (DHA), omega-3 can kill breast cancer cells and help stop the spread of the disease to other parts of the body.
